Thermal Arc Sprayed Metallic Coatings are used in situations where the substrate is coated with a more valuable metal, as with copper on steel. This kind of protective coating is efficient only when the metalizing gun is free from pores or damages. The deficiencies in a thermal sprayed metallic coating can cause critical damage to the substrate via the creation of local cells.
Another modification of thermal arc sprayed metallic coating is the substrate with less valuable material, as when steel is coated with zinc, or meanwhile, aluminum is thermally sprayed on steel risers or foreign fixed structures. This kind of coating is efficient only when the corrosion result of the metalizing coating is capable to reduce the corrosion process, and the creation of aeration cells is discontinued by the coating. The chance of damage due to blistering and cathodic corrosion survives, and it must be discussed during the design stage, before choosing this type of metallic coating. The conversion and recombination of hydrogen are possible, and that can lead to blistering and cathodic corrosion. For both zinc and aluminum, additional strength can be provided by cathodic stability. The polarization characteristics and low protection current should be defined per each specific case. Nevertheless, the strength potential must be limited toward the negative end. This limiting of the strength potential can, in turn, limit the creation of aluminates and zincates as corrosion outcomes.
